About Me

Steve Merritt MBACP

I am qualified as an Integrative Counsellor. I integrate three main counselling approaches within my work: Person-Centred - This approach underpins all of my work. I create a comfortable, non-judgmental environment by demonstrating warmth and genuine interest, empathy and unconditional positive regard towards my clients. It is non-directive, which means that I provide a safe space for clients to talk about their problems, and help them to find their own solutions. Psycho-Dynamic - This approach looks at the importance of the unconscious and past experience in shaping current behaviour. The client is encouraged to talk about childhood relationships and to look for repeating patterns in their lives. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) - Clients are taught ways to change thoughts and expectations, and relaxation techniques are used. It has been effective for stress-related ailments, phobias, obsessions, eating disorders and depression. I also offer visualizations, or a short Reiki treatment, to help with relaxation prior to a session if requested. I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and I follow their code of conduct and ethical framework. www.bacp.co.uk . I am fully covered by professional liability insurance. I hold a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and I have trained with, and worked for, the CRUSE Bereavement Agency in North Devon. I have also had a wide variety of experience working at the Holsworthy Medical Centre in Devon.
