An Integrative Approach
Integrative
Counselling
means
drawing
on
and
blending
specific
types
of
therapies.
It
is
not
linked
to
one
type
of
therapy
as
I
believe
that
no
approach
works
for
every
client
in
all
situations.
I
work
mainly
with
Person-Centred
and
Psycho-
Dynamic approaches as well as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
However,
just
using
different
approaches
does
not
make
an
Integrative
Counsellor
-
there
has
to
be
a
framework/theory
to determine when and why each element is used.
Counselling
focuses
on
the
client,
and
the
relationship
that
the
counsellor
builds
with
that
client.
Over
the
course
of
the
session/s
that
relationship
will
usually
change
several
times,
and
the
needs
of
the
client
at
each
stage
will
differ,
leading
to
a
change
of
counselling
approach.
Thus
the
approach
taken
at
any
point
will
depend
on
the
relationship
with
the
client
at that point. This means that the therapy is fitted to the client, and not the other way around.
Another
way
of
defining
Integrative
Counselling
is
that
it
works
holistically
with
clients,
helping
them
to
integrate
themselves
so
that
they
can
lead
a
fuller
and
more
self-aware life.
